  • The Boy with the Big Head

Mal saw his pediatrician on Wednesday.  I'm afraid I was a bit off about guessing his weight (our scale must be WAY off).  He's only a little over 21 pounds.  He's about 28 inches tall.  And his head is 49 cm.  And 49 cm is a little on the large size for his age.  However (as I asked the doctor), have you SEEN his brother, or his dad?

[In case you were unaware, my husband's head is so large that the Army doesn't make a helmet big enough to fit him.  They had to special-order his beret.]

While the doctor agrees that it is most likely familial, he still wants Mal to have an ultrasound of his head done, just to rule out anything else.  I'm confident that this is "benign familial macrocephaly" and nothing else, but since this is a very non-invasive test (no radiation, no anesthesia), I decided to do as the doctor suggests.

It's funny, before Larry and I had children, we used to have an inside joke about calling babies "smallheads."  For some reason, we don't do that anymore...
